Choirpower sang a super concert last Saturday to round off an excellent year. We meet again in September at Chequermead to start the new term - that will be 8.00 on the 11th. <br />
We have three concerts planned - October 25th, December 5th and 15th. Lots of lovely music, including a Swing into Christmas medley and a funky arrangement of God Rest ye Merry Gentlemen combined with Nutcracker tunes in a piano duet!<br />
<br />
Student exam results have come through and congratulations are in order for 100% Distinction marks in the Musical Theatre Exams. We had another Distinction and a Merit for the ABRSM exams. Well done everyone concerned.<br />
<br />
The summer holiday gives us all time to re-group, learn some new songs, plan for the coming year.<br />
<br />
Greenstede singers will be doing a recording of 10 of their favourite songs on October 18th, and a Christmas concert on December 6th.<br />
They will join together with Choirpower for our final Christmas Concert at Chequermead Arts Centre on December 15th.<br />
<br />
Lots to look forward to - meanwhile we can relax and enjoy this gorgeous summer weather.Marion Shusterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11126462757670101353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8012411073055348900.post-71356853254298603202014-04-24T05:36:00.001-07:002014-04-24T05:36:51.622-07:00Here we are at the start of a new term - and we are BUSY!!!!!!!!<br />
<br />
The Greenstede singers will perform a concert of partsongs on May 10th at the Moat Road United Reform Church - starting at 7.00. <br />
Tomorrow they will take part in the East Grinstead Music and Arts Festival - always an interesting and enjoyable event.<br />
Choirpower meet up again tonight after an Easter break. The programme for the term is very broad - Vaughan Williams folk songs alongside popular classics - Windmills of your Mind, I'm beginning to see the light, Phantom of the Opera selections and, of course, Les Mis medley (a complete favourite of the choir!).......and much more!. <div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 12pt 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Franz Peter Schubert – a shy giant.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">It’s
hard to believe that two of our greatest composers, both alive in Vienna in the
first decades of the 19th century, probably never met. By the time
young Schubert was ready to launch himself onto the world as a full time
composer, Beethoven was already quite deaf and, despite being publicly
acclaimed, had retreated to the inner world of his composition and very much
from the company of men. Schubert admired Beethoven enormously, but apparently was
too shy to introduce himself when they passed in the street.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We
think of Beethoven as a musical giant, yet Schubert was a giant too, but perhaps
a more friendly one.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Schubert
was born in 1797 to a poor, but musical, family, who recognized his musical
talent early and did their best to give him the opportunities and support he
needed throughout his life. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">His
father was a schoolmaster and taught his young son violin. An elder brother
taught him piano. He studied the organ and harmony and counterpoint with a
local organist. Family and friends made a habit of playing and singing
together, surrounding the talented young boy with music. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">At
the age of 11, he was accepted as a chorister in the Court Chapel. This meant
he had a scholarship to the prestigious Imperial and Royal Seminary, the best
possible place to hone his compositional skills and further his musical
training.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Music poured naturally and spontaneously from
him. Apart from a wealth of chamber music, piano music and nine symphonies, he
composed more than 600 songs, each of which is a pearl in its own right. He
established the Lied (German: Art song) as an important art form – a special
combination of the pianist’s and singer’s skills, a true duet, where the piano
part and melody are of equal importance, not just one accompanying the other.
Many composers since have followed his example and have given the singer a rich
repertoire of ‘art songs’ for the concert platform.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">His
songs are a very good entry point for a young singer into the world of
classical song. Heidenröslein( Rose among the Heather) sets an appealing tale
of a young boy and a wild red rose. Die Forelle (the Trout) tells a similar
story of a battle between the fisherman and his trout. Wiegenlied (Cradle Song)
is easily managed by the youngest of singers. Seligkeit (Happiness) - possibly
the most joyful song ever written- never fails to delight. An die Musik (to
Music) is guaranteed to warm the coldest of hearts. Ave Maria, best approached
when the singer’s breathing can manage longer phrases, is arguably the best
well-known of his songs and an excellent choice for weddings and special
occasions.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 16pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Schubert
died in 1828, only 31 years old, yet it is gratifying to know that he did
achieve fame in his short lifetime and was always surrounded by a close circle
of friends who loved him and his music, as we do today.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>

<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">We
are told that it is very beneficial for a child to learn to play a musical instrument
and to learn to read music at a young age. Recent studies have shown that this
helps children do well in other areas of their education. Some believe this is
because it ‘stretches’ the child and makes them more receptive to learning in
general. Some would say it encourages ‘the little grey cells’ to grow.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Others
would say that by achieving a level of competence as a musician, the child’s
confidence in learning is given a boost and they are given a headstart when
presented with other new subjects to learn. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Some
children can be seen to have a real interest in making music at a very early
age . Some are born into musical families and are surrounded by music making
from birth. Some are just inspired by an early experience<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>of seeing someone play or sing
beautifully.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Hopefully most children
will have been sung to as babies and toddlers, or had a fun time at playgroup
dancing and singing with their friends. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">For
some, the desire to create music and to communicate through music seems to come
from some deep personal wellspring that nothing can stop. Some of our greatest
musicians have had to overcome enormous opposition to pursue their dream. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Nevertheless,
although It sounds obvious, it has to be said that when it comes to the point
of taking lessons, it won’t work unless the child themselves wants to do it.
Most children will.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Music
is a language. You learn to read it by learning the words, signs, and symbols
by which it is written down. Just as in learning to read books, you need to be
really sure of your alphabet before going on to higher things, so you need to
be really sure the basic signs and symbols of musical language are thoroughly
understood as lessons proceed.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">It
is a language of sound and part of the learning is by using one’s ears. Some
musicians are very skilled at this and rely on this facility for their whole
lives and will always prefer to ‘play by ear’ and rather avoid <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>the written page. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">The
importance of developing a musical ‘ear’ cannot be underestimated. Your teacher
will include this as an important part of the learning process. <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">However,
some doors will always remain closed if the person does not learn to read the
written page. It will not be a problem to do so, if you always take care to
make sure every sign, every dot, every symbol, every word is thoroughly
understood and the music drilled either by singing or playing or both.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">Then
practice makes perfect. Noone would pretend that it doesn’t take a lot of practice
to be an excellent musician, but this way it will always be fun! <o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 10pt;">
<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;"><span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>

The Greenstede Singers won a trophy at the East Grinstead Music Festival and sang a May concert at the Peredur Arts Centre. They teamed up with Choirpower for a Christmas concert at Chequermead Arts Centre. they sang a very successful concert in Dormansland Parish Church, which raised over £1200 for Action Medical Research. We were delighted to welcome harpist, Lizzie Peacock, as our soloist for the latter concert.<br />
We rounded the year off with carols at Standen - the hot drinks and mince pies were great!!<br />
<br />
Choirpower sang a very successful (if very hot!) summer concert at Chequermead. In the autumn we joined up with other artists in Eastbourne, raisng money for the local theatre. We ended the term in style at Chequermead, with a Christmas concert, while supporting local Mayoral and Rotary Club charities with carol singing in the High Street and Meridian Hall. <br />
<br />
Congratulations to all last year's exam students! 100% pass rate on all practical and theory exams.<br />
Both Grade 8 ABRSM singers passed with Merit grades. <br />
All 9 Music theatre candidates passed with Distinction, including two Grade 8's.<br />
<br />
We are looking forward to Choirpower's Easter Concert on April 5th at Peredur Arts Centre. Easter eggs and Easter bonnets to the fore!<br />
The Greenstede singers will be presenting a programme of partsongs for the Siroptimist Society on May 10th in Trinity Methodist church. All welcome.Marion Shusterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11126462757670101353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8012411073055348900.post-14217706012782206392014-01-27T05:51:00.001-08:002014-01-27T06:12:22.851-08:00<br />

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-size: 18pt; line-height: 120%;"><em><span style="font-family: Calibri;">William
Byrd grew up in an age where singing was part of your everyday entertainment.
After dinner, the part books would be brought out and distributed amongst the
guests or family members and each would sing their part in the madrigals or
partsongs of the day. If you were lucky enough to have a lutenist or viol
(predecessor to the violin)player among your company, they would just join in
and all would sing and play together. We think of it now as a golden age of
music and art and we have a wealth of material from that time still being sung
today by choirs and groups across the world.<o:p></o:p></span></em></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;">Our Summer Students' concert at the Peredur Centre for the Arts was very well received by an appreciative audience. We now have a long tradition of such events and it is really nice to see students' confidence and performance skills developing. As usual we had a wide range of experience, but everyone produced high level performances, not least those students performing for the first time in front of an audience. </span><br />

All students passed with high marks. The Music Theatre candidates all achieved Distinction.<br />
Tips for exam success - choose your songs early, and get the memorising done. Then you can concentrate on really producing a tip-top performance. Plan your costumes and props well in advance.<br />
I recommend The Pocket guide to Musicals by Maureen Hughes - you can research the information easily for your discussion with the examiner.<br />

At the end of March we sang in a charity concert organised by the local Soroptimists, which raised £1500!<br />
Our mix of classical, folk and popular songs was much appreciated by the audience.<br />

The concert ended in more popular style, with Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', Bernstein's 'I Feel Pretty' and Bob Dylan's 'To Make You Feel My Love'.<br />
